Basic Food Hygiene Certificate

food safety People die every year in the UK from food poisoning or bacteria contained in food. As such, if you work in an establishment that prepares and sells food, it is recommended that you should take a food hygiene course.

Although it is not a legal requirement for every individual to take a qualification. Food Hygiene legistation requires employers to ensure that all staff handling food are adequately trained and supervised.

The certificate can be taken at a local course (see your council for details), or tests can be taken online.

The Basic Food Hygiene Certificate has now been replaced with a level 2 Award in Food Safety and include the following subjects:

  • Introduction to Food Safety
  • The Law
  • Food safety hazards
  • Taking temperatures
  • Refrigeration, chilling and cold holding of foods
  • Cooking, hot holding and reheating of foods
  • Food handlers
  • Principles of safe food storage
  • Cleaning
  • Food premises and equipment

Upon completion, successful candidates recieve a Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety and Hygiene.

Training usually takes between 2 and 3 hours and is equivalent to 6 hours in a class. You are required to achieve a 75% pass mark but don’t worry, if you are not successful the first time, you are entitled to sit the test at no extra cost.
